"Do I need to buy a premium theme?" is a question we get on almost every new Shopify project. The honest answer is: often not. Shopify's free themes have become genuinely good. But there are situations where a premium theme saves you time and money.
What free themes get right
Shopify's own free themes are built and maintained by Shopify, they're fast, they follow current standards (Online Store 2.0, with flexible sections on every page), and they get updates. For many brands, especially those just starting out, a well-customised free theme is more than enough.
What premium themes add
Premium themes from the Shopify Theme Store are a one-time purchase. They typically offer more layout choices and more built-in features, such as mega menus, advanced filtering, look-books, size charts, quick view, stock counters or more elaborate product galleries. They also come with support from the theme developer.
When a premium theme is worth it
- You need several features that would otherwise mean paid apps or custom code.
- Your catalogue is large and needs strong navigation and filtering.
- A particular theme already looks close to the design you want, saving hours of customisation.
- You want the theme developer's support when something goes wrong.
When a free theme is the smarter choice
- You're launching and testing the market.
- Your catalogue is small or medium-sized.
- You're working with a developer who can customise sections to your brand anyway.
- Speed is a top priority. Free themes are usually very lean.
Watch out for these, whatever you choose
Demo stores are deceiving. They use professional photography and carefully written content. Picture the theme with your own photos before deciding.
Features you won't use still load. A theme packed with effects can be heavier than you need.
Only buy from the official Theme Store. Themes bought elsewhere can be outdated, unsupported or even contain malicious code.
Test speed. Check the demo in PageSpeed Insights before buying. Our Core Web Vitals guide explains what to look for.
How we usually decide
We start by listing the features your store needs. If a free theme covers most of them with some customisation, we go free and spend the budget on design, content and SEO instead. If a premium theme covers them all out of the box and a free theme would need several apps, premium usually wins.
Either way, the theme is just the starting point. What makes a store stand out is how it's customised to your brand, your photography and your customers.
