Search "cafe near me" or "CA in Malviya Nagar" and look at what Google shows first. Before any normal website results, there's a map with three businesses on it. For a local business, getting into that little box is often worth more than anything else you could do online.
We're based in Jaipur and we do a lot of this for local clients. Here's the process we follow.
How Google decides who shows up
Google has said local results depend mainly on three things. Relevance: how well your listing matches what someone searched. Distance: how close you are to them, or to the area they typed. And prominence: how well-known and trusted you are, which includes reviews, links and mentions around the web.
You can't move your shop closer to every customer. But you have a lot of control over relevance and prominence.
1. Fill in your Google Business Profile properly
Claim your profile if you haven't, then complete every section. A few things matter more than the rest.
Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your signboard. Adding keywords like "Best Jewellery Shop Jaipur" to the name is against Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.
Choose your primary category carefully. It's one of the strongest signals you have. Pick the most specific category that fits, then add relevant secondary ones.
Show your address if customers visit you, or set a service area if you go to them. Add your phone number, website and hours, including festival and holiday hours. Write a plain-English description of what you do and where. List your products and services. And add photos: storefront, interior, team, products and work, with fresh ones every few weeks.
2. Get reviews coming in steadily
Reviews affect both where you rank and whether people choose you. Create a short review link from your profile and send it on WhatsApp after a purchase or visit. Ask every happy customer, not just your regulars. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and specifically.
And please don't buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange for five stars. It breaks Google's policies and can undo all your work.
3. Keep your details identical everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google profile, social pages, Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha and any other directory. Little differences, like "Rd" in one place and "Road" in another, are fine, but different phone numbers or old addresses confuse Google and customers alike.
4. Make your website clearly local
Put your full address, phone number and hours in the footer or on the contact page, and embed a Google Map. Mention Jaipur, and the areas you serve, naturally in titles, headings and text. Add LocalBusiness structured data so search engines can read your details. If you serve several areas, write genuinely useful pages for each rather than one page copied with the area name swapped.

5. Get mentioned around town
Local news features, trade associations, partnerships with nearby businesses, local events and being listed as a partner by suppliers or clients all build the "prominence" Google looks for. It's slow work, but it compounds.
6. Keep the profile active
Use Google Business Profile posts for new products, offers and events. Keep an eye on the Questions section too. If you don't answer questions there, anyone else can, and they might not get it right.
7. Measure the right things
Your profile's performance report shows views, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Check how you rank for key searches from different parts of the city. And ask new customers how they found you; it's the simplest attribution there is.
Mistakes we see all the time
- Keywords stuffed into the business name
- A broad category like "Store" when a specific one exists
- Two listings for the same location
- Negative reviews left unanswered
- A website that doesn't mention the city at all
Quick answers
How long does local SEO take? A well-set-up profile can improve within weeks. In competitive categories, expect several months of steady reviews and activity.
My business is online-only. Do I need this? Less so, but a verified profile with your office location still builds trust and helps when people search your brand name.
