Website Copywriting Tips for Small Business Owners

Laptop on a wooden table for writing website copy

Design gets the attention, but words do the selling. We've seen beautifully designed websites that bring in almost no enquiries, and simple ones that bring in plenty. The difference is nearly always the copy: whether it speaks clearly to the right person about what they care about.

You don't need to be a professional writer. You need to follow a few habits.

Write for one person

Picture your ideal customer. Maybe it's a first-time founder in Jaipur launching a clothing brand, or a doctor who needs more appointments. Write as if you're talking to them across a table. Your copy instantly becomes warmer and more specific.

Lead with what they get

Most business websites talk about themselves: "We are a leading provider of..." Customers care about their own problem. Flip it. Instead of "We offer SEO services", try "Get found on Google by people already looking for what you sell."

Be specific

Vague claims like "high quality", "best service" and "customer-focused" are on every website, so they mean nothing. Specifics are believable: "Handstitched in our Jaipur workshop", "Most stores launch in 3 weeks", "Replies on WhatsApp within an hour".

Keep it simple

Short sentences. Everyday words. One idea per paragraph. If you wouldn't say it out loud to a customer, don't write it. Jargon makes people feel excluded, not impressed.

Make it skimmable

Most visitors scan. Use clear headings that make sense on their own, short paragraphs, bullet points for lists and bold for the few things that really matter.

Answer the questions people actually ask

Price, timelines, process, what's included, what happens next. Collect the questions you hear on calls and WhatsApp, and answer them on the page. Every unanswered question is friction.

Add proof

Testimonials with real names, numbers you can stand behind, examples of work, reviews, certifications. Claims are easy; proof is persuasive.

End every page with a next step

Tell people what to do: shop the collection, book a call, message on WhatsApp. Use action words on buttons ("Get my quote", "See pricing") rather than "Submit".

Don't forget SEO

Use the words your customers search for, naturally, in headings and the first paragraph. Our keyword research guide helps you find them. But always write for people first.

A quick editing checklist

  • Can a stranger tell what you do within five seconds?
  • Does every section answer "why should I care?"
  • Have you cut every word that doesn't earn its place?
  • Does it sound like a person, not a brochure?
  • Is the next step obvious?
