Your meta title and description are your advert in Google's search results. They're often the first thing a potential customer ever reads about you. Yet on most small business websites, they're either left blank or filled with something like "Home | My Store".
Getting them right is one of the quickest SEO improvements you can make.
What they are
The meta title (or title tag) is the blue, clickable headline in search results, and it's also a strong signal to Google about what the page is about. The meta description is the grey text underneath. It doesn't directly affect rankings, but it strongly affects whether people click.
Google sometimes rewrites them, especially descriptions, if it thinks something else on the page matches the search better. Writing good ones makes that less likely.
Writing a good meta title
- Keep it to roughly 50 to 60 characters, so it isn't cut off.
- Put the main keyword near the start.
- Make each one unique. Every page should have its own.
- Add your brand at the end, if there's room.
- Write for people. It still has to make someone want to click.
A few simple formulas that work:
- Product: Oxidised Silver Jhumka with Pearls | Brand
- Collection: Cotton Kurtis for Women | Handblock Prints | Brand
- Service: Shopify Development in Jaipur | Brand
- Blog: How to Clean Silver Jewellery at Home (5 Easy Ways)
Writing a good meta description
- Aim for about 140 to 155 characters.
- Say what the page offers and why it's worth clicking.
- Include the keyword naturally; Google often bolds matching words.
- Add something specific: a price, delivery promise, number or benefit.
- End with a gentle nudge where it fits: shop, learn, book, compare.
For example: "Handmade oxidised silver jhumkas from Jaipur. Lightweight, festive and gift-ready. Free shipping over Rs 999 and easy 7-day returns."
Mistakes to avoid
- The same title or description on many pages
- Keyword stuffing: "Jhumka, jhumka earrings, buy jhumka, best jhumka"
- Titles so long they're cut off mid-word
- Descriptions that don't match the page, which leads to quick back-clicks
- Your brand name appearing twice because the theme adds it automatically
Where to start
You don't need to rewrite every page at once. In Google Search Console, find pages with lots of impressions but a low click-through rate. Rewrite those first, then check back in a month.
