Email Marketing for Online Stores: Where to Start

Smartphone home screen with apps used for email marketing

Instagram can change its algorithm overnight. Ad costs go up every festive season. Your email list is one of the few marketing channels you actually own. For online stores, a well-run email programme often becomes one of the most profitable sources of repeat sales, and it's easier to start than most people think.

Start collecting emails properly

Every customer who buys gives you an email address. Beyond that, add a simple signup in your footer and consider a gentle popup that appears after someone has browsed for a bit, not the second they arrive. Offer a genuine reason to join: early access to launches, a first-order discount or useful content.

Only email people who've agreed to hear from you, and always include an easy unsubscribe link.

Set up three automations first

Automations run on their own and usually bring in more revenue than one-off campaigns.

1. Welcome series

Two or three emails when someone signs up: who you are, what makes your products special, your best-sellers and any welcome offer.

2. Abandoned checkout

Shopify can send these automatically. A friendly reminder with the product image and a direct link back to checkout. More ideas in our cart abandonment guide.

3. Post-purchase

A thank-you, care or usage tips, and later a request for a review. This builds loyalty and trust at the same time.

Then add regular campaigns

New arrivals, restocks, festive collections, behind-the-scenes stories, styling or usage guides and occasional sales. Once or twice a month is plenty to start. Your blog posts make great email content; see our content calendar guide.

Which tool?

Shopify Email is built in and fine for getting started. As you grow, dedicated email platforms offer more advanced automation and segmentation. Choose based on your list size, budget and how much automation you need.

Write emails people want to open

  • A clear, specific subject line
  • One main message and one main button per email
  • Mobile-friendly design, as most emails are read on phones
  • Real product photos
  • A friendly, human tone

What to measure

Open rates are less reliable than they used to be because of privacy features, so focus on click rate, revenue per email, unsubscribe rate and how much revenue your automations bring each month.

Email and WhatsApp work together

For Indian audiences, WhatsApp often gets faster attention, while email is great for richer content and lower cost at scale. Many stores use both. See our WhatsApp guide.
