How to Get More Google Reviews (Without Breaking the Rules)

Thank you for supporting local sign on a shop window

Reviews do two jobs at once. They help you show up in Google's local results, and they help people choose you once they've found you. Yet most small businesses have far fewer reviews than happy customers. Usually the reason is simple: nobody asked.

Make it effortless

In your Google Business Profile, you'll find an option to share a review link. Copy it and keep it handy. Turn it into a QR code for your counter, packaging or invoices. The fewer taps between "sure, I'll leave a review" and actually writing one, the more reviews you'll get.

Ask at the right moment

The best time is right after a good experience: when a customer thanks you, when an order arrives on time, when a project wraps up. A short WhatsApp message works well: thank them, say a review really helps a small business, and include the link.

Ask everyone, not just your favourites

It's tempting to only ask your happiest regulars. But asking every customer gives you a steadier flow of reviews and a more natural mix, which is exactly what builds trust.

What not to do

Google's policies are clear here, and breaking them can lead to reviews being removed or your profile being restricted.

  • Don't buy reviews or use review-exchange groups.
  • Don't offer discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews.
  • Don't ask only for positive reviews, or filter who gets asked based on how happy they are.
  • Don't write reviews for yourself, or have staff and family do it.

Reply to every review

Replying shows you care, and future customers read your replies as much as the reviews themselves. Thank people by name, mention something specific, and keep it short. Don't copy and paste the same reply everywhere.

Handling negative reviews

It stings, but a calm, professional reply can actually build trust. Acknowledge the issue, apologise where it's fair, offer to fix it and take the conversation offline with a phone number or email. Never argue in public. If a review is fake or breaks Google's policies, you can report it from your profile.

Show reviews on your website

Once you have a good set, feature a few on your homepage and relevant pages, with names where customers are happy to share them. They're just as persuasive on your site as on Google.

Keep it going

A steady trickle of fresh reviews is better than a burst once a year. Build asking into your routine, after every order, visit or project, and it takes care of itself.
