Google Analytics 4 for Store Owners: The Reports That Matter

Charts displayed on a laptop screen for website analytics

Google Analytics 4 can feel overwhelming. There are dozens of reports, unfamiliar terms and settings everywhere. The good news is that as a store owner, you need only a handful of them to make better decisions. Here's where we'd focus.

First, make sure it's set up properly

On Shopify, connect GA4 through the Google & YouTube channel app, which sends e-commerce events like product views, add to cart, checkout and purchase. On WordPress or WooCommerce, use a reputable plugin or Google Tag Manager. Then place a test order and check the purchase shows up in the Realtime report. If purchases aren't tracked, most of GA4's value is lost.

Report 1: Where visitors come from

Go to Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition. This shows your channels: Organic Search, Paid Search, Organic Social, Direct, Email, Referral and so on, with sessions, engagement and revenue for each.

The question to ask: which channels bring visitors who actually buy? It's common to find that one channel sends lots of traffic but little revenue, while another quietly drives most sales.

Report 2: Which pages people land on

Engagement, Landing page shows the first page people see. Look for landing pages with lots of sessions but low engagement or no purchases. Those are pages letting people down, often because they're slow, unclear or don't match what the visitor expected.

Report 3: What's selling

Monetization, E-commerce purchases shows which products are viewed, added to cart and purchased. A product with many views but few add-to-carts usually has a product page problem: price, photos, description or trust. Our product page checklist helps diagnose it.

Report 4: The purchase journey

Build a simple funnel in Explore: product view, add to cart, begin checkout, purchase. Where's the biggest drop? That tells you where to focus. A big drop between cart and checkout often points to surprise costs. See why shoppers abandon carts.

Report 5: Devices

Compare mobile and desktop conversion rates. If mobile converts far worse, your mobile experience needs attention.

A few tips

  • Use UTM tags on Instagram, WhatsApp and email links so they're tracked properly rather than lumped into "Direct".
  • Compare periods, not single days.
  • Use Search Console for organic search queries; GA4 doesn't show them.
  • Don't chase every metric. Revenue, conversion rate and traffic quality matter most.

A monthly 20-minute review

Check revenue by channel, top landing pages, product performance and the funnel drop-off. Pick one thing to improve. Next month, see if it moved.
